What a budget is actually for

A budget has a bad name. It sounds like a diet for money: a list of things you are not allowed. That is not what it does.

A budget is a plan made once, for money already earned, so that twenty small decisions a week stop being made one at a time with no idea what they add up to. The decisions still happen. They happen in advance, when you are calm, instead of at a till when you are tired.

The shape is always the same. Money comes in. Some of it is already spoken for: somewhere to live, power, the phone, anything that arrives on a date whether it is thought about or not. Some is for the things chosen week to week: food, getting about, going out. What is left is the part that can be pointed somewhere on purpose.

A first budget does not need to be right. It needs to exist. Write what comes in, then the fixed things, then a rough figure for food and transport. If the numbers do not meet, that gap is the useful part, because it is the thing you now know.

Then look once at the end of the month at what actually happened. The first month is always wrong. The third is usually close.

There is no single correct split. A plan that works for one household is impossible for another, because the fixed costs are different. What matters is that the plan is yours and that you look at it again.
